A well-made bed is rarely a single layer. At Stella, we often refer to sheets, coverlets, quilts, throws, and cushions as bed clothes. Like clothing, each layer serves a purpose. Some provide warmth. Others add softness, texture, or color. Together, they create a bed that feels inviting, personal, and comfortable through every season.
The stacks throughout this journal offer a glimpse into how we think about building those layers.
Think in Texture
Texture is often what makes a bed feel finished. A brushed mohair throw brings warmth and loft. Linen offers a relaxed, lived-in quality. Velvet catches the light differently throughout the day. Quilted cotton adds softness and structure.
Even when working within a narrow color palette, layering materials creates depth. The pale blue stack combines airy mohair, silk velvet, and quilted printed cotton. Though each piece is different, they share a common feeling: calm, layered, and comfortable.
Let Color Tell the Story
Many people begin with color when dressing a bed, and so do we.
Color often provides the starting point, setting the mood and guiding the layers that follow. The blue stack moves through lake, cloud, and slate. The pink stack layers blush, rose, cream, and soft coral.
Rather than searching for exact matches, we look for tones that feel naturally related. Small shifts in color create a bed that feels collected over time rather than purchased all at once.

Pattern as a Finishing Layer
Pattern works best when supported by texture and color.
A floral print can sit comfortably beside velvet. Embroidery can live alongside a simple woven throw. Stripes feel fresh when grounded by crisp cotton or linen.
The goal is not matching. It is creating balance. One patterned piece is often enough to bring movement and personality to a bed while allowing the surrounding layers to remain quiet.

Building Your Bed's Wardrobe
The easiest way to begin is with three layers:
• A foundation of sheets you love sleeping in
• A textured layer such as a coverlet, quilt, or blanket
• A finishing piece that introduces color, pattern, or warmth
Over time, these layers become a wardrobe for the bed. Pieces can be added, removed, mixed, and rearranged with the seasons while maintaining a sense of comfort and cohesion.
The best beds are not static. They evolve. Natural fibers soften. Colors settle into one another. Favorite throws migrate from chair to bed and back again.
A thoughtfully layered bed is not about following rules. It is about creating a place you look forward to returning to at the end of the day.
